On August 24, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the RuPay card in Abu Dhabi, making the UAE the first country in the Middle East to launch the Indian electronic payment system.
The system for RuPay cards was introduced in India in 2012. In Singapore and Bhutan, India has already introduced the RuPay card.
In the UAE, as many as 21 significant corporate groups — including Lulu, Petrochem Middle East, NMC Healthcare and Landmark — have promised to recognize RuPay as a payment method.
Together with the Mercury Payments Services, the NPCI has produced RuPay cards acceptable to 1,75,000 dealer locations and 5,000 ATMs and money access places within the UAE. RuPay is an extremely secure network that protects from cyber hacks and is Master Card and Visa version of India.
